Why step aerobics is the smartest cardio you're not doing

Step aerobics gets written off as a relic of the 90s. That is a mistake. Step is one of the most complete forms of cardio you can do — and the science backs it up.

It builds bone, not just fitness. Because you are constantly stepping up and down, it is weight-bearing, which loads your bones and helps maintain bone density — something flat treadmill work does far less of.

It is a brain workout in disguise. Learning and linking choreography challenges the mind in a way repetitive cardio never will. Research on dance-based exercise links this kind of movement to better memory and mental sharpness as we age.

It meets you where you are. You control the intensity through your step height and how big you go with the arms, so the same class works for a nervous beginner and for someone chasing a serious sweat.

Add in the fact that it is genuinely fun — you are moving to music, not staring at a screen — and you have cardio you will actually keep coming back to. The best training programme is always the one you enjoy enough to repeat.
